Clinical Utility for Understanding and Working with Countertransference

WORKSHOP SUMMARY

We will begin this training by defining countertransference and the various ways of understanding its meaning(s).  We will explore how countertransference can both destroy and contribute to therapeutic outcome, in addition to identifying generalized patterns of presentation correlated with different diagnoses. Finally, we will explore clinical vignettes demonstrating countertransference of one type or another, and how such exploration is clinically relevant to the therapeutic process.

Alan Gooch, LCSW, studied psychoanalytic theory and literature at the University of California Berkeley, where he received a BA in English. He received an MSW from the UK College of Social Work, completing graduate internships at University of Kentucky Good Samaritan Hospital and Family Counseling Service. Prior to becoming an LCSW, Alan spent over 15 years helping persons of all walks of life to overcome various forms of addiction. Five of those years were spent as a volunteer intern at MPI Chemical Dependency Treatment Services. Alan has gained considerable insight from his own experiences with psychotherapy, consisting of individual psychoanalysis and in-depth couples therapy, which have informed his practice in ways that no amount of schooling could have otherwise provided.
