Alzheimer’s and Aging Concerns: Best Practices for Clinicians

Bio: Dr. Allison Gibson is an Assistant Professor in the University of Kentucky's College of Social Work. Dr. Gibson's clinical and research focus is in supporting older persons in times of crises and transitions through intervention, social supports, health promotion, and health outcomes research. She is passionate about addressing the unique needs of vulnerable populations in the aging process.

Description: As the U.S. population ages, social workers must begin structuring their interactions to meet the unique needs of older adults, particularly within the context of crisis intervention. The effect of aging, vulnerability, and resilience on responses to crisis is both multidimensional and complex. This presentation provides practical information from the perspective of diverse practice settings on how best support older adults and their families within the context of Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias, and normal aging concerns. This presentation will describe best practices, assessments, and interventions related to the unique needs of this population. To highlight key issues, case scenarios will be used to illustrate the importance of balancing safety and self-determination in the case of older adult crisis intervention.
